December 19, 2016 6:30-10 pm at the Ministry Center
Present: Jim Vogel, Jay Justmann, Jeff Guenther, Ron Takacs, Wes Andersen, Pastor Ben, Pastor Bill
We began our meeting with a Bible study led by Pastor Bill on John 1:1-14. In this chapter we learned about the identity of Jesus who is both true God from all eternity—“In the beginning was the Word”—yet also true man who was born into this world on Christmas—“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” We talked about how even though many people do not believe in Jesus and even though there is so much brokenness and sin in this world, yet sin did not overcome Jesus. Jesus overcame sin. He conquered it! Therefore, Satan’s accusations cannot stand. So if you have guilt…if you know people who think they’re down and out…there is hope. Hope in Jesus! That is what we want to share with people. This is why we encourage everyone to invite someone to come to church.
To zero in on our mission we then shared Victory Stories—stories about God’s blessings and success in carrying out our mission. After stopping to pray for Jackson Poulos and his upcoming scans, we rejoiced that through gifts given to our church and through the Poulos Family Benefit that we held last month at the ministry center we’ve been able to give the family over $17,100 so far! When including cash or checks given directly to the family through our donation box we think that figure is probably around $20K total. We thank God for the generosity of so many. The Poulos family expresses their deep gratitude also.
Positive feedback was shared regarding the Victory Kids Christmas service. A wonderful quote from one of the three wise men: “We may be kings but we’re really peasants before Jesus.” What an amazing expression of faith and affirmation that our Victory Kids program is making an eternally significant difference in the lives of our children! A new family also shared their appreciation for how patient and caring our VK volunteers have been with their kids as evidence that we are carrying out our mission of “meeting people where they’re at.”
In a preliminary discussion of next year’s financial ministry plan (FY 2017-2018), Pastor Ben and Pastor Bill requested that we look into the possibility of adding a part-time (6-10 hrs / wk?) Operations / Communications position. This support staff position could potentially bring together some elements of the Communications Director position that was presented in last year’s 2020 staffing plan and other elements related to facilities use and management. Our pastors will be putting together an initial job description of what they think the position might look like to discuss at Leadership Team and Staff meetings for feedback. Jim Vogel will begin modeling next year’s budget to evaluate the financial feasibility of it along with a discussion of whether we would seek to get another Sr Vicar to replace Peter Schlicht.
Next we discussed the nominations to fill the vacant Leadership Team positions and decided to appoint Steve Abramowski and Jason Seiberlich. It should be noted that we received no negative feedback from the congregation regarding anyone nominated. Everyone was spoken very highly of by those who nominated them. We were extremely blessed to have so many men full of the Holy Spirit willing to serve and look forward to continuing to serve in the Gospel ministry together at VotL. Steve and Jason will be installed publicly during a worship service on January 1st.
As part of our discussion about the Leadership Team, Pastor Ben presented a plan to have each Leadership Team member oversee one of 7 areas of ministry (Worship, Outreach, Discipleship, Fellowship, Volunteerism, Properties, Finances). We will discuss this further at our next meeting with Steve and Jason present. At our next meeting we will also decide who will serve in the roles of President and Secretary (positions formerly held by outgoing LT members Tim Johnson and Dan Tomczyk).
After some discussion, we approved a No Alcohol and Drugs policy for our ministry center campus as well as a Facility Use Policy and a Facilities Request and Agreement Form. These forms can be accessed online as pdf files within the Member and Attender Group in CCB or upon request from one of our pastors. Anyone wishing to use our ministry center facilities for an event or gathering will be required to fill out the Facilities Request and Agreement Form.
