What is Maundy Thursday?
The name for “Maundy Thursday” comes from the Latin word “mandatum,” meaning “commandment”. It refers to the two “new” commandments our Lord gave to his disciples on this day. The first is to love one another. The second is to take Communion in remembrance of Jesus. In the early church, Maundy Thursday was also the day on which those who had fallen away from the Church were restored to full fellowship with other believers. This happened after they observed the 40-day penitential season of Lent. Today we are reminded of the reconciliation we have because of Christ’s body and blood given for the forgiveness of our sin. We are also reminded of the example of self-giving love shown by our Lord as he washed the feet of his disciples.
What will Maundy Thursday be like at Victory of the Lamb?
We will be offering Holy Communion as part of this service. This will be a quieter, simple service of about 45 minutes. It will focus on that night when Jesus was betrayed and his institution of Holy Communion with his disciples beforehand. The message will be based on the sacrament to prepare our hearts for receiving the gifts Jesus gives in Holy Communion.
