Sermons on James
Faith Prays for Blessing
As it says in James 1:16, every good and perfect gift comes from God. Therefore, God wants us to call on him in prayer. We pray a prayer of thanksgiving in times of blessing, and we call out to God for help in times of trial. James 5 tells us that prayer that flows from faith is powerful and effective. Faith Submits to God
Our selfish desires lead us to quarrel to get our own way. James 4 teaches us to put our faith into action by changing our hearts through submission to God’s Word. When we humble ourselves in such a way, God will lift us up. Sermon Text: James 4:1-10 Preacher: Pastor Bill Limmer
Faith Speaks Wisely
Our tongue is one of the smallest parts of our bodies, and yet it can cause the most trouble. The first two chapters of James teach us about growth through trials, putting knowledge into action, and letting go of worldly biases. James 3 adds another level to understanding Christian maturity as it teaches us the importance of speaking wisely with our words. Our words ought to flow from faith. Out of the same mouth should not come praising and cursing.…
Faith does Good Works
We believe that we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ apart from works. But true faith in Jesus will lead to good works. Our faith in not just some intellectual knowledge of God but the action of living it out. James 2 teaches us that it is the work of the Holy Spirit leading us to know that we are loved so that we can love. Sermon Text: James 2:14-26 Preacher: Pastor Bill Limmer
Faith has no Favorites
It is common to categorize people based on their finances or influence. We might evaluate what such people can do for us. James 2 teaches us to put our faith in to action and love others without showing favoritism. All people were made by God and Jesus died for them all, therefore we ought not play favorites. Sermon Text: James 2:1-13 Preacher: Pastor Ben Sadler
Faith Perseveres
Everyone experiences times of testing and suffering. The book of James opens with an unexpected theme – the idea of maturity through trials and tribulations. James tells us that challenges can be good because they result in greater maturity and a stronger faith. James will teach us of perseverance through trials. Sermon Text: James 1:1-8;13-18 Preacher: Pastor Bill Limmer
Lead with Humility
Wisdom and knowledge are often confused. Knowledge is readily available and just a click away. Wisdom, however, is knowing how to use that knowledge and recognizing the source behind it. Leaders need to know how to remain humble and lead with wisdom. God teaches us in his Word to use the wisdom of Heaven to humble ourselves and recognize our need for Jesus. Sermon Text: James 3:13-18
Listen to Learn
In our culture, we’re taught to speak our minds, and those who speak loudest and often are heard. But God has a different view. God’s Word teaches us how powerful our words can be. Instead of speaking everything that comes to mind, Christians are encouraged to “tame our tongues” and listen first. We can use our tongues to change the direction of people’s lives by sharing Jesus with them. Sermon Text: James 3:1-12
Living Our Faith
We do not have to do anything to earn God’s grace. But that doesn’t mean we don’t do good in the world around us. God teaches us that “faith without deeds is dead”. In other words, God wants us to serve and care for others as a reflection of His love in our communities. When we trust in Jesus with our mind, body, and soul and live our faith by doing good, our faith is living and active and does…
Put People First
We often judge a person based on their appearance. But appearances are deceiving. The world may have taught us to look at and treat people a certain way based on their appearance or social status, but God teaches us to treat all people with mercy, loving all our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus didn’t and doesn’t discriminate against anyone; he lived, died, and rose for all. Sermon Text: James 2:1-13
Resist Temptation, Embrace Trials
Temptation looks different for everyone. But no matter what it looks like for you, something disguised as acceptable by our culture tempts your sinful heart. Whether it’s food, images, people, or something else, there are tons of things that can pull us far away from what God wants for our lives. It’s easy to slide from temptation into sin, but you can resist with the help of God. Trials are opportunities for us to grow in faith and mature in…
Prayer Over Other “Priorities”
We sometimes think of prayer as a waste of time. So we don’t make time to pray. When we offer to pray, we sometimes feel like we are taking the easy way out as opposed to enlisting the powerful God to intervene in life. We think prayer makes us weak, but prayer allows us to tap into our power source. Renewal comes with quality time spent with God in prayer. Sermon Text: James 5:16
