Sermons on Proverbs
The Goal of Wisdom
When we let God decide what is wise, what is good and evil, then we begin to experience a taste of the Garden. Wisdom will not keep us from all pain and suffering, but when we live according to God’s wisdom we do experience blessing. The goal of wisdom is not necessarily for us to be healthy, wealthy, and happy. But as we walk in God’s ways, trusting in his wisdom and power, we do experience a sense of purpose…
Jesus: The Embodiment of Wisdom
Proverbs 8 personifies wisdom. It speaks of wisdom being the person who created the world. John 1 picks up on this idea, describing Jesus as the Word made flesh. Paul calls Jesus “the wisdom of God.” God’s greatest revelation of wisdom is in the Gospel. It seems foolish to us at first. But his death and resurrection to reconcile the world to himself reveal the height, depth, width, and length of his wisdom and love. Sermon Text: Proverbs 8:12, 27-31…
The Community of Wisdom
The Proverbs emphasize the importance of a wise community. Although true wisdom comes from God and his Word, it takes a community of believers to discover and apply it. We can’t understand God’s Word all on our own. We need Christian teachers and advisers and mentors who will help us discern what’s best. We will follow the crowd, so we need to choose wisely which crowd to follow. Sermon Text: Proverbs 2:20-22
The Pursuit of Wisdom
The Proverbs describe wisdom as an endless journey and a pursuit. We are to cry out for wisdom. James says we should be praying for wisdom and God will give it. Every new stage in life, every new challenge calls for us to pursue fresh wisdom from God. Using God’s wisdom to guide our decisions doesn’t guarantee smooth sailing for our lives, but it does give us peace as we rely on God’s will for our lives. Sermon Text: Proverbs 2:1-11
God: The Source of Wisdom
We need to know that God is the source of all true wisdom. Instead of beginning with Google, we need to begin with God. We might think that only the last and most recent ideas are the wisest. But true wisdom stands the test of time. We see this theme throughout Scripture, starting with the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve had a choice: either they could trust God’s view of good and bad, or they…
