Sermons on Hope

Fresh Start

January 1st starts a new year.   A time to start over and become new people. We usually carry our sin and guilt into the New Year. So this year, let’s have a fresh start through the finished work of Jesus. Sermon Text: Micah 7: 18-20 Preaching Pastor: Pastor Ben Sadler

HOPE

We all have hopes. Some of our hopes are wishful thinking. Our kids hope for toys and technology. We hope to make them happy. We are afraid to hope because we have been disappointed so many times before. Hope has to do with trust and confidence. It is the resting of the human heart on God, with full trust that he will care for us and for our salvation and that he will give us the happiness he has promised.…

Faith Prays for Blessing

As it says in James 1:16, every good and perfect gift comes from God. Therefore, God wants us to call on him in prayer. We pray a prayer of thanksgiving in times of blessing, and we call out to God for help in times of trial. James 5 tells us that prayer that flows from faith is powerful and effective. Sermon Text: James 5:13-20 Preacher: Pastor Ben Sadler

Faith Submits to God

Our selfish desires lead us to quarrel to get our own way. James 4 teaches us to put our faith into action by changing our hearts through submission to God’s Word. When we humble ourselves in such a way, God will lift us up. Sermon Text: James 4:1-10 Preacher: Pastor Bill Limmer

The Origin of Life

In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. In Genesis 1 we learn that God created, designed, ordered, and organized all of creation to function for our good. He created the sun, moon, and stars to mark our days. He designed the waters, vegetation, and animals to all work together. And then finally he created humans in his image to be his representatives and co-rulers of his good creation. Humans are not some evolved afterthought because of some…

Why does God let bad things happen?

We know that being a Christian doesn’t guarantee us care-free lives. But the weight of the world often gets heavy. We see senseless violence, suffering and pain, hardship, and strife everywhere we look. Some of the most faith-filled people endure more difficult trials than we can ever imagine. We can’t help wondering why these bad things happen in our lives and the lives of those around us. We know that God has the power to prevent all of it. So…

God & Depression

Elijah has just experienced God at work in a great victory over the prophets of Baal. But he soon despairs of his own life. As he flees from Jezebel after a great victory, he feels lonely, isolated, and fearful. He wants to die. In this difficult time of depression, God strengthens and refreshes Elijah with the truth. When you feel depressed, it can seem like nothing will ever get better. You feel alone, isolated, and afraid. But through the support…

Foolproof Hope

Our culture tells us that this life is all there is. Living things are just matter, and nobody really knows what kind of spiritual life there is beyond the grave (if any). The First Century Christians in Corinth had been influenced by their Greek culture to believe something similar. They believed that when a person died their soul might float up to heaven, but that was about it. Paul said, “That is not Christianity!” He goes on to speak in…

Everyday Christmas

Buddy the Elf is a bit overwhelming to his newfound father, Walter. Buddy’s obsession with Christmas – particularly singing Christmas songs loudly – is foreign to Walter, who is a no-nonsense businessman. However, when he is faced with the possibility of losing his son forever, Walter joins in the Christmas chorus to bring Buddy home. Christmas gets built up in our minds as a list of expectations and to-do items. We sometimes find ourselves glad that it’s over. But Jesus…

Blessed Through the Savior

Ebenezer Scrooge had no need for Christmas. In fact, he seemed to despise anything good, such as compassion, empathy, and charity. But when he’s forced to look back on his life and sees things from different perspectives, he realizes that life isn’t worth living if you’re only living for yourself. We may get caught up in the allure of accumulating materials, money, and accomplishments. But in the end, we can’t take anything with us. None of us is good enough…

Changing Hearts

The Grinch has one goal: stop Christmas at all costs. He plots and schemes to get rid of all Christmas from Whoville by stealing trees, presents, food, and anything that hints at Christmas. But, when he witnesses the people of Whoville celebrating Christmas without the material goods, he has a change of heart. Without God, our hearts are hard. They deceive us and lead us to act and think in ways that go against God’s will for us. When we…

Unexpectedly Wonderful

George Bailey has had enough. He’s always working, always sacrificing, and it seems to get him nowhere. When he faces losing the family business that he never wanted to run in the first place, he contemplates ending it all. However, he gets the opportunity to see what the world would be like without him and recognizes how wonderful his life really is. Things don’t always turn out the way we’ve planned. This gets frustrating to us because we think we…
