This past week, I picked up some trash outside of church by the highway. There was a white packing strap out there about a half inch wide and about fifteen feet long. Some of the trash was light, some was a little heavy, and some was smelly. I needed to wash my hands when I got back inside.
Like the trash I picked up, the trash talk of negativity and criticism dirty the landscape of our hearts every day. Likely, you will hear or read your fair share of trash talk today. Some of the trash talk will be directed toward you, and some will be directed toward others, but if you read it or hear it, it will touch your soul.
And if we are not careful, the trash talk will come from our mouths: Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be (James 3:10).
This weekend we are continuing our series Top Ten Ways to Live a Better Life. We will look at the 8th Commandment: You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. Instead of trash talking about our neighbor we will see that we can honor others by defending them, speaking well of them, and taking their words and actions in the kindest possible way. And when we do that, we will look and act like Jesus!
Reaching today’s people with Christ’s victory,
