Do you know of any “acceptable” sins? There aren’t any. But sometimes, we live like there are. One example of this is envy.
In Matthew 20, a landowner goes out and hires various workers at various times of the day, from very early in the morning until it is almost quitting time. At the end of the day, he pays them. Whether they worked twelve hours or one hour, they all got paid the same amount – a full day’s pay! Those hired early in the day went nuts, saying, “That’s not fair! That’s not right!” The landowner replied, “Don’t I have the right to be do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?”
Sometimes, this drives us insane. Why is God blessing that co-worker we despise? Why did that student who cheated his way through school get an amazing job? Are we envious because God is generous in grace? Because He’s willing to love that person we don’t think is worthy of love, who is living an immoral lifestyle?
Because of our sin, the one we are most envious of is God. We want His glory, His position, His power, His control. We are often sure we would do a better job than God.
Our sin of envy crucified Jesus. For he (Pilate) knew that is was out of envy that they handed Jesus over to him (Matthew 27:18). We put Jesus on the cross because we wanted his life and his glory for ourselves.
And in the middle of our selfishness, Jesus said, “Take my life. You can have all that I have.” That is so cool! God credited every bit of Christ’s righteousness to our account. Love does not envy (1 Corinthians 13:4). Jesus is the answer to our envy. Jesus is love.
