The other day, I asked my daughter Shelby, “Honey, if I told you that you are becoming more and more like your mom and dad, would that be a compliment or an insult?”
She gave a perfect answer: “It depends.”
You see, there are some things about our parents that we want to imitate. Maybe your parents were disciplined and organized. Perhaps they were caring and thoughtful. Maybe they were godly and tried to put God first. And so, it would be a compliment if others see you following in their footsteps.
And yet, there are things about Emily and I that Shelby and the rest of our kids don’t want to imitate. I’m sure that is the same for you. Maybe your parents were undisciplined and distracted. Perhaps they were quick-tempered and overbearing. Maybe they weren’t present when you needed them the most. In many ways, it wasn’t their fault. They most likely inherited those same characteristics from their family.
The reality is we all inherit both blessings and curses from our parents. But here is the good news: none of us has to pass on the curse to the next generation. We can call out the curse. We can rely on the Holy Spirit and walk in the footsteps of Christ and live a new life.
So let’s be grateful for all the blessings that we have received from our families. But let’s be ready to overcome the curse with God’s help. This is going to be the focus for this Sunday’s sermon as we look at the family of Jacob and how God led him to overcome generations of sinful dysfunction.
I hope to see you in person or online this weekend at 9:00 or 10:30am.
Sharing Christ’s victory,
