This week Jacky and I went to the Muskego Water Bugs water ski show. Right before the main part of the show started, the emcee asked for all the audience members who are active or inactive members of the military, police officers, and EMS personnel to stand. These are the people who keep us safe and free and they remind us that freedom comes at the cost of sacrifice.
Then, we all stood as a boat carrying the American flag trolled in front of us while the National Anthem played in the background. I lamented how quickly I, and many others, complain about what is going on in our country instead of celebrating and living out our freedoms.
As great as the freedom we have as citizens of the United States is, it pales in comparison to the spiritual freedom that we have in Christ that is available to all people no matter their nationality. Like our earthly freedom, this spiritual freedom came at a high cost, the cost of God’s own life.
Romans 5:8 God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Jesus paid the price of our freedom from sin, death, and Satan. Now we are free! Free to live according to the Holy Spirit and so we are free to place the needs of others before our own, to carry one another’s burdens, to love one another – even the ones with whom we disagree. It is a different way of living. It is the way of living free in Christ.
How are you celebrating your freedom in Christ?
