How would you summarize the message of most politically-driven media? Let’s start by describing what you would hear from the other side, whatever the other side means to you. You’d probably hear something like, “Those people on the other side are getting in our way. They are hurting our nation, our democracy. They are stopping political progress.”
Now let’s say you turned the channel back to your side. What is the message you would hear? Probably something similar. “Those people on the other side are causing all the problems.” Do you see? Both sides are claiming that all their problems are really outside of them.
Why is this type of media so popular? Well, because there is some truth in it. There is corruption on the other side. And if you go looking for it, you will be able to find enough corruption to fill up a 24-hour media cycle. But here’s what that kind of mindset is lacking: humility and self-awareness. Yes, there are problems “out there”, but there are also problems “in here”: in our church, in our homes, and in our own hearts.
As we continue our sermon series through the book of Nehemiah, we will find that as the Israelites were rebuilding the walls around Jerusalem, their biggest problems were not outside the walls, but inside them. Just like us, they needed a Savior, not just from outside threats but from internal corruption. Thankfully, one day, Jesus would walk through those walls to rescue us all from ourselves.
Hope to see you for worship this Sunday at 9:00 or 10:30am, in person or online. Feel free to invite a family member or friend to join you. You can worship at Victory, on our live stream site, or on our YouTube channel.
Reaching today’s people with Christ’s victory,
CURRENT SERIES – FORWARD NO MATTER WHAT
ICYMI – Last weekend, Pastor Bill helped us plan for opposition. From technology difficulties to the busyness of life to the post-Christian culture we live in, we know we’ll face opposition that will make it a challenge to work at our mission. But the work can’t stop when it gets difficult. You can click here to read and watch this message.
Coming Up This Weekend – Pastor Ben leads us to examine how our own hearts impact the mission of the church. Inward repentance and renewal must precede outward projects and goals. Join us for worship on Sunday at 9:00 or 10:30am at Victory on our live stream site or our YouTube channel.
Bedtime Stories – On Friday, October 8, Victory will host Bedtime Stories at 6:30pm. We’ll have fall-themed crafts and games for children to participate in or take home, as well as a read-aloud and snacks. You can click here for details about this event and learn how you can get involved.
Blood Drive – Save a life… donate blood! Victory will host our final Versiti Blood Drive for the year on Wednesday, October 13 from 2:30-6:30pm. You can sign up to donate by clicking here.
Bible in a Year: New Testament Starts Saturday! – If you didn’t join the year-long Bible reading plan in January, or if you’ve fallen behind on the plan, now is a great time to jump in! We’ll be starting to read the New Testament this Saturday, October 2. You can view the plan and join in the reading plan on YouVersion by clicking here.
Volunteers: Action Needed! – If you currently serve on a team at Victory, thank you! Everything we do is only possible because of you giving your time and talents at Victory. We are in the process of switching systems for scheduling and church management, and you received an email on Thursday inviting you to sign into our new system (Planning Center) to set up your serving preferences. Please take care of this by Monday so our volunteers can get started with scheduling for November and December. Thank you!
Next Victory U Class: What Divides and Unites Us As Christians – If you’ve ever wondered why churches are so different in their buildings, leadership, orders of service, music, and more… then Pastor Ben’s next Victory University class is for you. What Divides and Unites Us as Christians is a four-week class that kicks off on October 27. Watch next week for more information about this course and how you can register, coming next week.
