Do you feel like your world is spinning out of control? Are you depressed, anxious, or losing hope? I think much of our emotional discomfort comes from trying to control what is out of our control. On the other hand, peace and purpose come from focusing on what we can control. Our hope will be restored when we meditate on the promises of God.
Below are three lists to help you move from anxiety and despair to peace and purpose.
Things I CANNOT control:
- The effects of the pandemic
- The results of the election
- The pain and confusion surrounding the social unrest
- Devastation due to wildfires out west
Things that I CAN control:
- How often I repent of my sin
- How I treat my family and those close to me
- How often I meditate on Scripture
- How often I pray
- How often I participate in worship
Reasons to put my hope in the Lord:
- God is in control (Psalm 146:10).
- God never slumbers or sleeps (Psalm 121:3-4)
- God loves you (Psalm 103:11-12)
- God will work out all things for our good (Romans 8:28)
- The best is yet to come (Revelation 21:1-5)
I’d love to hear from you. Was walking through these lists helpful to you? Would you add anything to any of the lists above? Is there anything else I can do to help you walk through the unique challenges of 2020?
I look forward to worshiping with you this weekend in person or online this Saturday at 5:00pm or Sunday at 9:00 or 10:30am.
Sharing Christ’s victory,
CURRENT SERIES – PATH TO VICTORY
ICYMI – Last weekend, Pastor Ben continued the Path to Victory series with a message about the importance of groups. When we participate in a group and love one another, we get the unique opportunity to experience the loving presence of God among us. We meet in groups to encourage one another and grow closer to God. Click here to read or watch this message.
Coming Up This Weekend – This weekend, Pastor Ben will share a message about how groups help keep us accountable. In groups, we experience the powerful blessing of holding each other accountable to the Word of God. Join us on Saturday at 5:00pm or Sunday at 9:00 or 10:30am. You can join in for these services in person or online.
Bedtime Stories – The next edition of Bedtime Stories at Victory is coming up on Friday, October 2 at 6:30pm. We’ll offer this contact-free event for families in our community to enjoy time with one another, get some free books, and get out of the house. Go to votl.life/bedtime to learn more, and make sure to grab an invite card for this event at church this weekend. You can also click here to serve at and donate to this event.
Relationship Abuse and Kids – The next presentation in our “Parenting Support for COVID and Beyond” series is coming up on Monday, October 5 at 6:30pm. You can join in-person, online, or watch on demand for some tips and strategies for helping your children navigate relationship-building with others in safe, Godly ways. More information about this presentation and others in the series, go to votl.life/parenting.
Versiti Blood Drive – Victory is partnering with Versiti to serve our community! We’ll host a blood drive on Wednesday, October 14 from 3:00-6:30pm. In order to maintain social distancing and ensure safety, we’ll be adjusting our set-up from other drives and we will not be able to provide child care during the drive. All attempting donors will receive a Versiti bottle opener, and all successful donors will receive a COVID antibody test (results accessible on Versiti’s secure online portal after the drive). To sign up to donate, click here. Thank you for saving a life!
Change to Worship – Starting this week, we will no longer request that you reserve your seats for worship. However, we will maintain sanitizing procedures, require masks, and seat you for worship to maintain social distancing. We still ask parents to reserve spots for their children in Victory Kids. Additionally, we will not have a live band this weekend. Instead, we will use pre-recorded music during worship. See you this weekend!
Groups at Victory – Life is better together. That’s why Groups are such a big part of what we do at Victory. There are groups available for different stages of life, interests, and needs. We’ll be launching groups starting October 4. We’ve added some groups since last weekend, so be sure to click here to view available groups and get involved!
This Week’s Bible Reading – This week in the Biblical Storyline Plan, we read Nehemiah 7-13 and 1 Chronicles 1-6. Supporting videos for this week include Public Reading and Overview: Chronicles. Learn more about this reading plan and get involved at votl.life/bible.
